![]() Three flight attendants, Rachel Fernheimer, Seanique Mallory and Kathryn Sandoval, were assigned to the flight and another Southwest Airlines employee was a passenger. Upon learning of the passengers' injuries, however, she decided to speed the approach and expedite landing. The captain initially planned on a long final approach to make sure the crew completed all the emergency checklists. The flight crew reported initial communications difficulties because of the loud noises, distraction and wearing oxygen masks, but as the aircraft descended, communications improved. The controller quickly provided vectors to PHL. She initially requested a course to the nearest airport, but then decided that the airport in Philadelphia was best equipped for this aircraft's emergency. The captain asked the air traffic controller for a course diversion. The captain took over flying the plane and the first officer carried out the emergency checklist. The flight crew reported that the aircraft was very difficult to control throughout the remainder of the flight because of the extensive damage. The FDR also showed that the aircraft rolled left by about 40° before the flight crew was able to counter the roll. The flight data recorder (FDR) showed that the left engine's performance parameters all dropped simultaneously, vibration became severe and within five seconds the cabin altitude alert activated. The flight crew donned their emergency oxygen masks and the first officer began the emergency descent. They reported that the aircraft yawed and set off several cockpit emergency alarms a "gray puff of smoke" appeared and the aircraft's cabin suddenly lost air pressure. The flight crew stated that the departure and climb from LaGuardia were normal, with no indications of any problems the first officer was flying and the captain was monitoring. The flight crew carried out an emergency descent of the aircraft and diverted it to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Fragments from the inlet and cowling struck the wing and fuselage and broke a window at row 14 in the passenger compartment, which caused rapid decompression of the aircraft. As a result, most of the engine inlet and parts of the cowling broke off. After that earlier accident, the engine manufacturer, CFM, issued a service directive calling for ultrasonic inspections of the turbine fan blades with certain serial numbers, service cycles or service time. This accident was very similar to an accident suffered 20 months earlier by Southwest Airlines Flight 3472 flying the same aircraft type with the same engine type. One passenger was partially ejected from the aircraft and sustained fatal injuries, while eight other passengers sustained minor injuries. They want you to stay in your current apartment and, if possible, will work with you on the timing of your renewal. Is it worth the risk? FACT: Owners prefer to have you renew your lease. You have to remember that if you resign your lease, but then change your mind later, the apartment – and the rent – will be your responsibility until a new resident is found to take your place. Unfortunately, if your future is up in the air, it may be best to wait to sign and risk losing your ability to renew. Typically, a lease only covers one year, and it doesn’t guarantee you get to stay for a second year. Legally, the renewal process is a courtesy not a requirement. Apartment Lease Renewal: 6 Important Tips to Avoid a Renter Apocalypse ![]() ![]() Many in the financial inclusion community have looked to digital credit as a means of helping small, often informal, enterprises manage daily cash-flow needs or as a way for households to obtain emergency liquidity for things like medical emergencies. Most borrowers are using digital credit for consumption This can have potentially long-lasting negative repercussions when these borrowers are reported to the credit bureau. These data reveal a worrisome side of digital credit that, at best, may help borrowers to smooth consumption but at a high cost and, at worst, may tempt borrowers with easy-to-access credit that they struggle to repay.įurther, the transaction data show that first-time borrowers are much more likely to default, which may reflect lax credit screening procedures. Interestingly, the transactional data from Tanzania also show that early morning borrowers are the most likely to repay on time. The transaction data show that borrowers under the age of 25 have higher-than-average default rates even though they take smaller loans. ![]() Who’s at greatest risk of repaying late or defaulting? The survey data from Kenya and Tanzania and provider data from Tanzania show that men and women repay at similar rates, but most people struggling to repay are men simply because most borrowers are men. Indeed, the transactional data show that Tanzania’s poorest and most rural regions have the highest late repayment and default rates. These would be high percentages in any market, but they are more concerning in a market that targets unserved and underserved customers. Additionally, supply-side data of digital credit transactions from Tanzania show that 17 percent of the loans granted in the sample period were in default, and that at the end of the sample period, 85 percent of active loans had not been paid within 90 days. About 12 percent and 31 percent, respectively, say they have defaulted. Roughly 50 percent of digital borrowers in Kenya and 56 percent in Tanzania report that they have repaid a loan late. The data suggest a market slowdown and a greater focus on consumer protection would be prudent to avoid a credit bubble and to ensure digital credit markets develop in a way that improves the lives of low-income consumers. We have also reviewed transactional and demographic data associated with over 20 million digital loans (with an average loan size below $15) disbursed over a 23-month period in Tanzania.īoth the demand- and supply-side data show that transparency and responsible lending issues are contributing to high late-payment and default rates in digital credit. But CGAP has now gathered and analyzed phone survey data from over 1,100 digital borrowers from Kenya and 1,000 borrowers from Tanzania. For years the data didn’t exist to give us a clear picture of market dynamics and risks. Others have cautioned that digital credit may be just a new iteration of consumer credit that could lead to risky credit booms. ![]() In recent years, many in the financial inclusion community have supported digital credit because they see its potential to help unbanked or underbanked customers meet their short-term household or business liquidity needs. This approach could let us detect many more black holes beyond our local universe and reveal how these exotic objects evolved further back in cosmic time." "However, gravitational lensing makes it possible to study inactive black holes, something not currently possible in distant galaxies. Nightingale said, "Most of the biggest black holes that we know about are in an active state, where matter pulled in close to the black hole heats up and releases energy in the form of light, X-rays, and other radiation." ![]() Like a real lens, this also magnifies the background galaxy, allowing scientists to study it in enhanced detail. James Nightingale, Department of Physics, Durham University, said, "This particular black hole, which is roughly 30 billion times the mass of our sun, is one of the biggest ever detected and on the upper limit of how large we believe black holes can theoretically become, so it is an extremely exciting discovery."Ī gravitational lens occurs when the gravitational field of a foreground galaxy appears to bend the light of a background galaxy, meaning that we observe it more than once. The findings are published today in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.Ī video showing how Astronomers used gravitational lensing to discover a black hole 30 billion times the mass of the sun in a galaxy 2 billion light years away. When the researchers included an ultramassive black hole in one of their simulations the path taken by the light from the faraway galaxy to reach Earth matched the path seen in real images captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Each simulation includes a different mass black hole, changing light's journey to Earth. This is the first black hole found using the technique, whereby the team simulates light traveling through the universe hundreds of thousands of times. They found an ultramassive black hole, an object over 30 billion times the mass of our sun, in the foreground galaxy-a scale rarely seen by astronomers. The team, led by Durham University, UK, used gravitational lensing-where a foreground galaxy bends the light from a more distant object and magnifies it-and supercomputer simulations on the DiRAC HPC facility, which enabled the team to closely examine how light is bent by a black hole inside a galaxy hundreds of millions of light years from Earth. ![]() ![]() ![]() “When It’s Grim Be The Grim Reaper”- It’s a memorable Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s quote.Chiefs Grim Reaper ShirtĪre you looking for a shirt that can help you express your love for Patrick Mahomes and his legendary victory for Super Bowl hopes?
